WinTherm

WinTherm is a cross-platform thermal modeling tool that was developed for heat management design and analysis. WinTherm allows users from any engineering background (thermal or other) to analyze their thermal designs very quickly and accurately. The intuitive arrangement of the user interface permits both novice and expert users to setup and analyze thermal systems with a minimum of user input. WinTherm is divided into four distinct segments to guide the user through the solution procedure: Geometry, Editor, Analyze, and Post Processor. Several tutorials included with the software will familiarize the user with the simple but elegant modeling procedure. The purpose of WinTherm is to do either conceptual design analysis or detailed thermal analysis. The approach used by this program is to start with a meshed surface representation or one of several predefined, generic models that define a class of models (i.e., component or system), such as an exhaust system, underhood assembly, circuit board, battery, or a full vehicle. The next step is to edit the model's dimensions, material properties, and surface properties. A thermal representation is obtained by selecting a part type. Finally, appropriate boundary conditions are chosen and the modeling procedure is complete and ready to run. This program provides the capability to construct models very easily through the use of graphical components built into the user interface. With WinTherm, the user can perform full parametric sweeps of their component level design (e.g., exhaust components, circuit board) or their complete system (e.g., automobile, HVAC) much faster than any other software thermal management tool. WinTherm will run under Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, Linux, and many versions of UNIX. KEY FEATURES Complete Thermal Analysis Radiation - automatic calculation of view factors using a very fast algorithm. Adjustable view factor regulates the accuracy versus speed of the radiation ray-tracing algorithm. Conduction - automatic conduction linkages. Convection - edit convection curves in the curve editor. Easy to Use All model attributes are entered interactively through the Graphical User Interface Editable material and surface database: - surface condition: thermal emissivity, solar absorptivity - material properties: conductivity, density, specific heat Boundary conditions are applied directly to the geometry - assign temperatures - impose heat rates as curves or values - assign fluid temperatures/ convection coefficients as values or curves - curves can be created with curve editor or imported Extensive model manipulation - create, edit ,or import geometry - built in diagnostics and limited mesh repair - models can be pieced together, 'parted out', or even replaced Fast and Accurate Surface Mesh - time consuming volume mesh not needed Extremely fast and accurate thermal solution. Surface temperatures are initialized with a steady state solution and then the simulation proceeds through time with a transient solution over the designated prediction time. Physical temperature of the model’s surface is displayed on the meshed geometry as a thermal image during the solution process. The image can be rotated and viewed at any direction throughout the thermal prediction simulation. Specialized part types such as 3-layer elements and highly conductive parts allow modeling of complex situations. State-of-the-art voxel-based ray tracer that uses spatial subdivision to achieve fast view factor solutions. Cross-Platform Platforms - the user interface, and files are common for all platforms: Windows, SGI, Sun, HP, Linux Extensive geometry import formats: Rhino3D (3DM) Nastran (NAS) Patran Neutral (NTL) Wavefront (OBJ) Stereolithography (STL) AutoCAD (DXF)
